5. Books We've been referencing books since the beginning of this series, so why all of a sudden name this post books ?  It's primarily because after Shilla and Baekje, Stuff becomes much harder to use cleanly , particularly as we go north into Goguryeo.. It doesn't help that North Korea is the most isolated, bat-shit crazy fucking nation on earth, but it also doesn't help that in 2002 China launched the Northeast Project (东北工程; Dōngběi Gōngchéng) , an official state-sponsored effort to reinterpret the history of its modern northeastern borderlands through the idea of a timeless “unified multiethnic Chinese state.” Conveniently, that meant that ancient peoples and kingdoms occupying territory inside modern China could now be folded backward into Chinese national history. Access to historical sites were suddenly denied. Museum exhibits, site descriptions and even UNESCO heritage narratives became part of the argument.
